District Wide Braille Awareness Project Up & Running

This growing 100 book collection is housed at the Easton Preschool Media Center, which also serves as the base for NPS District's Early Childhood Professional Lending Library. The project includes not only reading selections for birth through third grade but a diversity awareness program for sighted children, Braille Is Beautiful, targeted for grades fourth through sixth, which also can be used effectively with older students.

The Braille Is Beautiful program comes with a teacher's guide, 100 Braille alphabet cards, three paperback books with stories by and about ordinary blind people, fourteen minute video Jake and the Secret Code, eighteen minute video That the Blind May Read, master copy of the student instruction book and workbook, and one slate and stylus for writing Braille. The teacher's guide is structured in five units with a variety of learning formats, including group discussions, interactive games, and applied projects. Parts of the program can be used together or alone.

To check out books, teachers can physically come by in person to peruse collection or email Jackie Forbes, Easton's Assistant Media Center Specialist, This email address is being protected from spambots.
