At a work session December 8, the School Board discussed again how to use $8.2 million in temporary federal funding from the Jobs Bill.
The board's review has been underway for several months, and has been complicated by a number of factors: concern for employees who have not had a raise in several years, and who would like to see the Jobs Bill put toward a salary increase or bonus; early projections that Norfolk Public Schools faces at least a $21 million revenue gap for 2011-12; and recommendations from city officials that the School Board use the Jobs Bill money to offset next year's budget gap, instead of offering employees extra compensation now.

Some Norfolk Public Schools employees may see their take-home pay reduced beginning in January due to Congress’ delay in deciding whether to renew tax cuts that are set to expire on December 31, 2010.
The delay may force the U.S. Treasury Department to pass on new tax tables with higher withholding levels for employees. The Treasury Department usually releases the coming year’s tax tables, which determine the take-home pay of millions of wage earners, by mid-November because it takes payroll processors weeks to adjust payroll systems before January 1. If Congress does not resolve the issue soon, income tax tables will revert to higher levels dating from June 2001.

“Is career and technical education important in today’s society? Why or why not?”
