Don’t expect there to be much bragging going on. In fact, don’t expect to hear much conversation at all from the tight-knit crew representative of the facilities management department.
To Maintenance Supervisor Harry Bonneville, there’s nothing extraordinary about what he and the workers in facilities management do, it’s just part of who they are.
“Most people that work in facilities have 15 to 20 years in the division, and a lot of them either went to Norfolk Public Schools or have their own kids in school here,” Bonneville said. “We have a dedicated group of employees that do what needs to be done.”
At a recent breakfast held to honor the contributions of facilities workers, Bonneville and members of the facilities team talked shop over sausage biscuits and juice. Some chatted with Superintendent of Schools Stephen C. Jones about challenges facing the school division. Others just grabbed their breakfast and headed for their work trucks to begin the day.
“Our people know what the deal is and understand that we are here to support what goes on in those classrooms,” Bonneville said. “That’s job one for us, making sure that teaching and learning goes on no matter what has happened.”
No matter what, a group of blue-clad workers standing near him nodded in agreement. Even in the face of a Nor’easter.
