Sailors Play Santa for Lindenwood Students

Lauren Carter gently pulled back red and silver stripped wrapping paper, careful not to tear any edges. The title of the newest book in her collection peaked through from beneath the holiday paper.

On Monday, crew members of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt played Santa at their partner school, Lindenwood Elementary. Sailors from the ship raised over $4,000 to provide hats, scarves, gloves and coats to students in need of winter weather gear. But it was the purchase of 375 grade-appropriate books wrapped in shiny Christmas paper and bows- one for each and every student at Lindenwood- that made Carter smile.

"They really want us to know how to read," Carter said hugging her book close to her chest. "This is very special to me."
