After weeks of discussion, the School Board on Wednesday, March 24 unanimously approved a 2010-11 operating budget that asks the City Council to bridge more of the gap left by severe state revenue cuts for education.

The board voted to request $106.7 million from the Council, as part of a total proposed 2010-11 school division budget of $298 million. In the current fiscal year, the city is providing NPS with $101 million. If the council were to approve the School Board's request, the city's contribution would increase by $5.7 million next year.

That still represents about a $29 million decrease in Norfolk Public Schools' overall budget compared to the current fiscal year; this year's total budget is $327.2 million.
