Crisp white dress shirts and crimson colored neck ties adorned the 25 male mentees of Coleman Place Elementary School as they met the Superintendent of Schools for the very first time. Dr. Callie Richardson, principal, along with a host of mentors brought the male students for a one-on-one with Dr. Bentley to share their future goals and aspirations.
Hands raised across the room when Dr. Bentley asked the mentees "If you were king of the world, what one thing would you change about Coleman Place?" One student responded, "I would like to see a pool." Another student quickly stood up and looked at Dr. Bentley and said, "It would be nice to have a hot tub." Audience members chuckled at the request as the other students shared their wishes that ranged from chicken sandwiches to raises for teachers.
This mentoring group began three years ago and meets once a week to go on outings, assist with tutoring and make lunch room visits with the participants.
