Every year, NPS hosts the Tidewater Post-Secondary Fair to introduce high and 8th grade middle school students to over 130 representatives from colleges/universities, career and technical schools, military, and apprenticeship programs to prepare for future career paths.
This event will take place on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College (Batten Convocation Center). The fair also provides students and parents information on in-state and out-of-state public and private colleges, as well as a one-on-one consultation with an ACCESS counselor to answer specific questions regarding financial aid and scholarships.
For over 20 years, this annual event has provided valuable information on course offerings, admissions, financial aid, and other details related to postsecondary programs. What’s one great way to make learning fun and engaging for children and their parents? Invite them to a game and awards night at their school.
And that’s just what Lake Taylor Middle School did on Thursday night, October 13, when staff members, students and their families gathered to have fun and learn about reading and writing activities and games that students are using in their classrooms.
Students also were recognized for their outstanding efforts in reading and writing.
The school plans more Family Nights:

Principal Kafele’s first name, “Baruti,” definitely describes his passion for education as a “man on fire.” Ruffner Academy welcomed Principal Kafele last week. He spent an entire day talking to students, teachers and parents about how to “soar” into the future.
The Milken National educator and 14-year administrator has been on a mission to eliminate the “attitude gap” for students in New Jersey and across the country. His message to parents was to stay involved. He used an analogy to football, and how coaches constantly assess progress after every play and make the necessary changes to win the game. “I believe parents and teachers have to make daily assessments," said Kafele. "We, as educators, made a decision to educate our future, and the objective is to teach them how to soar."
