School Board Chairman Dr. Kirk T. Houston Sr. will be the featured keynote speaker at the City of Norfolk’s Martin Luther King Day March and Observance January 17, 2011.  On Jan. 3, the Chesapeake Athletic Club (CAC) named Maury’s Jack Baker the 2010 Bob Bates Outstanding Coach Award winner at their annual Dil Toms Hot Stove Night. The Maury basketball legend has won 621 games.

“We believe in the next year or two Baker most likely will become Virginia’s all-time leader in coaching victories,” said Gene Byerly, a former basketball star at Atlantic Christian College and a member of the selection committee.

This was the second time Baker has earned this distinction.  The award was named for Bob Bates, a former Norfolk Public Schools coach, teacher and principal.

During his acceptance remarks, Baker joked about the 23 years that intervened between the two awards, asking the club members: “What took you so long?”  He later spoke of the significance of the award’s namesake, the late Bob “Ripper” Bates.  Baker’s older brother had played for Coach Bates at Maury.

Maury students earn special honor

From left to right, Anne Christie, program director; senior Benjamin Raliski, the program's top student; senior Tara Franklin, who won the Spirit of the Oath award for having earned 785 hours of community service; and Maury Principal Andrea Tottossy.

Seniors in Maury High School's Medical and Health Specialties Program got a taste of being real medical students recently, when they earned their "white shirts" during a takeoff on the traditional white coat ceremony for students at medical schools. They also recited the Maury Student Hippocratic Oath, which was written by a student who graduated from the program last year.

"These white shirts are a sign of respect within the program," said Anne Christie, the Maury program's director. "We want to recognize our seniors for their achievements."

Students were asked to wear their shirts every Friday.
