The week leading up to spring break vacation seems endless. But a visit to Maury High School April 3, 2012 by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan injected some pre-vacation excitement.

The Vice President and Mr. Duncan were in town to talk about the importance of post-secondary education to students' futures.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Duncan spoke to a Maury gymnasium packed with Maury students, staff, parents and community members, as well as seniors from Granby High School, who were visited four years ago by then-Senator Barack Obama.

Mr. Duncan spoke first, and urged students to remember the need to finish high school and go on to further learning.

"If you drop out of high school, there are no good jobs out there," Mr. Duncan said. "The jobs of the future are going to require some type of higher education."

Neither of Vice President Biden's parents went to college, but Mr. Biden's father instilled in him the need to get a college education.

"They can take your job from you, Joey, but they can never take your degree," Mr. Biden remembered his father telling him.

Ensuring that more American students graduate from college is an economic and national security imperative, he said. Decades ago, America was No. 1 in the world in terms of graduating students from post-secondary institutions. Now, America is No. 16. Meanwhile, 60 percent of future jobs will require some form of training beyond high school.

Mr. Biden urged the students in the audience to remember that having post-secondary education will make a difference to getting and keeping a well-paying job. However, the value of a college degree transcends that, he said.

"College education gives you confidence," he said. "A college education reinforces your sense of self worth. College education gives you standing in the community. College education is more than about the money; it's more than about the jobs. It's about your mind. It's about your sense of self-worth and self-satisfaction, and that can never be taken away from you."

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to visit Maury High School April 3

On Tuesday, April 3,  2012, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will travel to Maury High School to discuss college affordability. Since the members of Maury High School’s senior class were born, average published tuition and fees at public four-year colleges across the country have tripled. Two thirds of all college students take out loans to pay for school, graduating with an average debt of more than $25,000.

Maury juniors and seniors and staff members will be invited to watch the presentation in the school gym. Seniors from Granby High have been invited to attend as well. Then-Senator Barack Obama visited Granby four years ago, when the Class of 2012 was beginning its high school journey.

Norfolk Public Schools has made it a priority for students to graduate from high school on time and move on to options and opportunities after high school.

In the afternoon of April 3, at 3:45 p.m., Vice President Biden will continue the dialogue by answering questions about college affordability and the steps the Administration has taken to keep college affordable in Virginia and across the country on Twitter. People can ask questions using the hashtag #AskVP and follow the chat live from the @VP Twitter account. Additional details can be found at WhiteHouse.gov/AskVP.
