Maury High's Shawn Ellis named Norfolk Teacher of the Year

142After an evening of celebration and suspense, Mr. Shawn Ellis, a math teacher at Maury High School, was named Norfolk's Citywide Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Ellis now will compete with other top teachers from around Virginia for the statewide title.

The announcement came on Thursday, May 31, 2012 during NPS' second-annual Evening of Excellence honoring Teachers of the Year and Inspiration Award nominees, as well as their administrators and invited guests.

The Oscar-style gala was funded by the Norfolk Education Foundation, and took place at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. Presiding over the ceremony were student emcees Deionjalei Miller of Lafayette-Winona Middle School and Jonathan Guthrie of Norview High School, and Interim Superintendent of Schools Mr. Michael Spencer. Also participating were School Board Chairman Dr. Kirk T. Houston, Sr., Norfolk Education Foundation Board Chairwoman Kim Georges, and Associate Superintendent for Academics Dr. Christine Harris. Dr. Veronica Haynes, NPS' Senior Coordinator for Science Instruction, delivered the invocation. Student performers, including the Granby High School Singers, the Norview High School NJROTC and the All-City Jazz Band, rounded out an evening of glitz and glamor. Representing the City Council were Mayor Paul Fraim and City Councilman Tommy Smigiel.

Along with 28 Inspiration Award winners in categories such as Best Instructional Team and Best in Transportation Services, four top Teachers of the Year were named.
Elementary Teacher of the Year: Debbie Reynolds of Mary Calcott Elementary School.

Middle School Teacher of the Year: Sinclair Harris of Norview Middle School.

High School Teacher of the Year: Shawn Ellis of Maury High School.

Auxiliary Education Teacher of the Year: Robin Ward of the Norfolk Technical Center.

NPS and the Norfolk Education Foundation would like to thank sponsors TowneBank, MacArthur Center Mall, Hampton Roads Ventures, Dillard's and the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
