Next week, Norfolk Public Schools School Nutrition will celebrate National School Lunch Week 2011: School Lunch - Let's Grow Healthy. The focus of this week is to help students understand where food comes from. Many of the cafeterias in our district will host various activities throughout the week to highlight this nationally recognized celebration. Check with your child's school for information.
On a division-wide note, School Nutrition will feature Virginia Grown Empire Apples from Turkey Knob Apples located in the Shenandoah Valley. These apples will be offered at all school lunches on October 11, 2011. In addition, School Nutrition will feature other fresh produce in the form of baby carrots, apple slices, oranges, cantaloupe, cucumber slices, and fresh steamed yellow squash!
During National School Lunch Week we also will invite parents to lunch on October 12, 2011 to celebrate National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day. School Nutrition invites all parents to lunch on this day to celebrate National School Lunch Week and enjoy the healthy benefits school lunch has to offer. Our menu for October 12 will feature Oven Roasted Chicken with a Whole Wheat Roll, Shrimp Po Boy, Fruit & Yogurt Bowl, Corn on the Cob, Fresh Cantaloupe, Steamed Broccoli Spears, and Ice Cold Milk.
Breakfast and lunch are free of charge for all free and reduced students. For the paid student, breakfast is $0.90 in all schools and lunch is $1.65 at the elementary level and $1.80 at the secondary level.
