As part of Norfolk Public Schools' continuing effort to engage parents and the community in children's education, NPS invites families to participate in two exciting, simultaneous events at Norfolk State University on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
NPS will host Parent University: A Family Engagement Expo at Norfolk State's Joe Echols Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Sharif Abdullah. He is a trainer and leading catalyst for inclusive social, cultural and spiritual transformation. He also co-authored "The Class Continuum" with Dr. Donna Beegle. Dr. Abdullah will speak from the perspective success during trying times.
Also on April 21 from 8:30-1:30 p.m., NPS' community partners will offer the Hampton Roads Youth Leadership Conference, with programming for secondary students, at NSU's New Student Center. The keynote speaker for the youth will be Anika Rollins, an Eastern Virginia Medical School student.
Norfolk Public Schools will provide transportation to those who request it.
The goal of NPS' Parent University: A Family Engagement Expo is to provide a forum for parents and other family members to learn ways in which they can help their children meet or exceed high academic performance standards. In addition, they will gain information about the services available within the school system as well as community-based resources. From noon to 1 p.m., there will be approximately 50 community-based resource agencies, including healthcare, education, military and employment, to answer questions for families.
Registration for both events is open to parents and families of students enrolled in Norfolk Public Schools. These are popular events, so register soon.
